lrn2play: Forbidden Psalm

for some time now i came across Forbidden Psalm from videos on Youtube and also reading
about the role-playing game, MÖRK BORG.
and i didn't think much of it but as time went on i kept becoming more curious about it.
i began watching actual game-play videos to get a grasp on the table-top game.

i think what attracts me to Forbidden Psalm is that it can be a fantasy game and i can
get more out of my Dungeons and Dragons miniatures.

i bought and downloaded a pdf copy of the rules and gave it a read and sat down and
created a warband.
i can say i would give it an A+ for putting together a creative rulebook but it is not printer
friendly, so i might get a physical copy somewhere down the road.

one thing that i find funny is that for the most part you use a 20 sided die.
there are times you use other types of dice but for everything mainly for gameplay it's a d20.
another thing about this game that i find interesting is that everything (for the majority)
has a difficulty roll of 12.
with dice modifiers and such, meet or beat a 12, it's a success!!

after reading the creating a warband i went and made a band of misfits by using some of my
obscure D&D figures.

from left to right, the Bone Vultures.
Azul the Brutal, Rosha the Nervous, Skar the Weasel, Thunk the Childlike, and Onyxia the Soured.

read some more of the rulebook over the last week or two and set some time aside to play.
starting with the first scenario it was a basic collect items and try not to die.

i think what i like about this game also is like Perilous Tales is the small gaming area.
all you need is 2'x2' gaming space which is perfect in my eyes.

in the first scenario the warband was given a quest by a mad wizard to collect a certain amount
of black mushrooms while fighting summoned ghouls.
for every successful search of a black mushroom off of a corpse within the walls of the ruins
we also find some treasure and a ghoul appears random from the left or right side of the
gaming area.

since i don't have any corpse figures i used my Arcknight thin figures that i have gotten several
years ago, way back when i was thinking of getting into D&D.

after successfully searching a corpse, Azul the Brutal was ambushed by a disemboweled ghoul.

Thunk sees a corpse to look through but a ghoul is also lurking towards him.

now the biggest drawback at searching for treasure is that if you fail a search check,
that model loses 1 health point because of some hazards there might be.

Rosha the Nervous suffered two health points just from trying to search through the closest
corpse from the deployment zone.

Rosha left the corpse and went to give Thunk a hand at getting rid of a ghoul.

Azul the Brutal putting on the finishing touches of taking out a ghoul.

once the fourth corpse was looted another ghoul happened to spawn on the left side and
created some trouble for Thunk and Rosha.

Skar the Weasel came around to give a helping hand and attempted but failed to kill a ghoul.
while everyone else started to head to the left of the ruins.
as the others were making their way over, Rosha became a fatality courtesy of a critical hit
which becomes maximum damage.

the way the game's mechanics are for stats and attacking it makes it a challenge to complete
quests or just try to stay alive.
and i think that is what makes a game really cool is it's not just a tank and spank type of game.
it's a simple game but it has a complication in it to where you have to think of what
you want to do.

i made these characters not really knowing what was expected but instead of redoing the
stats i just left them be and dealt with it all.

Onyxia the Soured was able to make it over and avenge Rosha.
Thunk the Childlike took some damage after everything was said and done.
the game was over after turn six.
and since the warband never recovered all six corpses,
never got to see the Corpse Collector appear,
which is probably a good thing.

after the game i went through the campaign section to see what happens to the warband.
Rosha the Nervous recovers with some broken bones, the warband as a whole received a nice
amount of gold, gain some experience points, and found a relic which was
a wooden duck.
i don't know the way it sounds some future scenarios are quite funny like that.

some of the monsters in this game are so far fetched i do commit a campaign for Forbidden Psalm
i'm probably going to go out of my way to convert and make some of these creatures.
