the giant frog monster: Perilous (western) Tales

since resuming my Perilous Tales campaign with the Wolf Man episode i unintentionally
created a mini storyline within my campaign that will feature the infamous Whateley family.
as one of the villain scenarios in the rulebook i was so looking forward to creating a western
version of them being a Lovecraft fan.

but to get there we have to stay on the road that is haunted by creatures and undesirables.
the episode is the giant frog monster.
(the swamp fiend from the rulebook.)
the group continues towards the Whateley's farmhouse and soon discovers that there
is more here than a reclusive family.
gossip around town says that some of those graves are filled with children who didn't
make it past their first year or stillborn.
just sad.

the objectives are: Destroy the Idol, Rescue the Prisoner, and Tell Us What You Know.
the perils in the game are: Creeping Death, Driven Back, and Mired.
which all were randomly generated.

using the Eagle Eye trait to spot some minions,
the game started off rough with the threat level beginning at level four.
and pretty much every turn it went up.

was able to score a victory point for the Tell Us What You Know objective,
but it seemed like everything went downhill from here.

the threat checks were very mild at this point.
nothing major happening, just threat markers creeping across the table.

at this moment in the game i was rolling terribly and i could not get anything going
in my favor no matter what.
failing horror checks and Eagle Eye skill checks that would have helped.

towards the end of the game the main villain finally appeared.
with no real clear explanation of the special rule of this particular villain,
it became frenzied and just made mince meat out of the group.
no one died thank god but still it was brutal.

this was a very short game.
with the threat level starting at four instead of one because of the major upgrades i took
after the Wolf Man episode this game was totally different from the others i've played.

i played too conservatively and i feel that was my downfall for failing this game.
i scored a D grade for my efforts, far worse so far in this campaign.

i am certainly not upgrading anything this time around.
i don't want that threat level to go up anymore than it has to.

until next time.....💀💀💀💀💀

  1. Great fun to read, as always.
The giant monster looks great, where's he from?
And those Whately's sure do get around, I'm sure they make great neighbours, one you get to know them.

  2. Sometimes the Perils really are out to get you! I've had games of Perilous Tales go this way as well.

  3. Well that adventure didn't go to plan ! LOL The high threat level from the start probably didn't help much, and put you on a back foot from the start.

    1. I was on such a good streak on getting the win in the end but this was the first game where the threat level was so high at the start.
