Monster (May)hem 2026

several weeks ago i was reading some posts on Dave's Wargames Terrain Workshop blog page,
and he was in the process of adding some terrifying Gnarloc Raiders for i assume is a Kroot army.
but i noticed it was for a painting challenge that i did not know about.

so i went over to Dead Dick's Tavern and checked out what this challenge was about.
for the month of May, this challenge you had to paint a monstrous creature or something big.
i thought this challenge would be cool,
but unfortunately i didn't really have any big monsters to paint or whatnot.
until i remembered i did have some things somewhere.

last year i bought a terrain crate from Mantic Games called "the Haunted Manor".
and in it was what they called a goliath monstrosity.
which basically to me was a chunk of hard plastic in the shape of an eldritch monster of sorts.

picking the color scheme for it i didn't want to go with the green i have been doing lately
for these Lovecraft creatures.
and what came out was almost the same color palette i used back in the late 90's on a small
Tyranid army i had for Warhammer 40k.

after i got that painted and done i found the skeletal dragon i got a while back
from Wizkids/Pathfinder.
now the thing is i went on Amazon to find such a figure and found this one.
it's called,
Pathfinder Battles Deep Cuts - Gargantuan Skeletal Dragon...
for not that much so i was excited.
several days later i got the package and i was like what the hell is this.

i used it once in one of our old D&D sessions and that was it.
it's like i am embarrassed to call it gargantuan.

i gave it a quick black wash and added some watered down green wash for the wings,
and added a little color to the eyes to give it some life.
this thing is like a young dragon compared to some of the Wizkids Dungeons and Dragons
Nolzur's Marvelous Miniature line.

i like finding these painting challenges because it helps me get some of my pile of shame
painted and completed.
i tend to drag my feet and wait until the last minute or life gets in the way,
but overall i enjoy these challenges.
i look at these challenges as a kick in the butt to get stuff done.

  1. Two very excellent monsters. Well done.
I agree, challenges can help clear those unpainted piles, I may well try this one next year.

  2. Excellent work on both monsters, at least the dragon is larger than the old metal citadel dragons, now they were tiny ! LOL Challenges can be very useful if they cover a subject you have an interest in.

    1. thanks man, I have to say this Pathfinder dragon is kind of the same size as the old Citadel ones from around the fifth edition era, they're the ones I'm used to. the really old Citadel dragons were tiny, I've only ever seen pictures of those.

    2. I was thinking pre Warhammer ones, as I had the original Fire Dragon, and that was only 3 inches long ! LOL

    1. thanks, much appreciated.
i think everyone had the same purple/green/pink colored Tyranids lol, i know i did.
i used a glistening metallic green for some of them, they looked so ratchet.
